How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

When you’re holding a pregnancy test in your hand, it’s normal to feel some anxiety. How can a simple stick provide such life-changing information? If you’re feeling nervous, you’re not alone. We’ll dive through the science behind pregnancy tests. Understanding how they work gives you clarity and peace of mind while waiting for those important results.

How Does It Work?

At-home pregnancy tests are straightforward to use. They detect pregnancy by measuring the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your body. HCG, often referred to as the pregnancy hormone, is only present when you’re pregnant.

There are two types of pregnancy tests: urine tests and blood tests. A simple urine test is most commonly used. During early pregnancy, hCG in blood and urine rises quickly—doubling every 2 to 3 days.

How Do I Use It?

For most at-home pregnancy tests, you either place the end of the test in your urine stream, dip the test into a container of urine, or apply a few drops of urine onto the test. After a few minutes, the result will appear. It may show a plus or minus sign, the words “yes” or “no,” one or two lines, or the words “pregnant” or “not pregnant.”

For the most accurate results, taking the test at least one day after your missed period is best. This gives your body enough time to produce a detectable amount of hCG.

Verify Your Pregnancy

Even if you’ve taken an at-home test and got a positive result, verifying your pregnancy with a medical-grade test is essential.

While home pregnancy tests are generally very accurate, incorrect results are always possible. This can happen if you take the test at the wrong time or do not follow the instructions properly.
